The crypto AI sector just had a month that’s hard to ignore. It gained 54% in September, more than double the broader crypto market’s 24% return, according to Grayscale’s latest sector update.
That kind of outperformance naturally gets attention. But the sector is still tiny compared with the rest of crypto, sitting at roughly $15 billion even after September’s rally.
Crypto AI Sector Posts A Sharp September Surge
The move puts artificial intelligence firmly back on the crypto radar. AI could become one of the most consequential technologies of the 21st century, while blockchains may provide infrastructure that centralized AI systems don’t easily offer.
The proposed overlap is pretty straightforward: agent payments, identity, private compute and verifiable records.

Still, enthusiasm doesn’t change the numbers. The AI-focused crypto market remains the smallest of the six Crypto Sectors.
NEAR And Other AI Tokens Lead The Charge
Several tokens stood out during September’s rally. NEAR jumped 183%, while Bittensor gained 37% and World climbed 47%.
Venice also posted a 70% gain. Its consumer AI application focuses on privacy-preserving access to AI models without storing users’ prompts or responses.
NEAR is positioned around agentic commerce, while Bittensor operates an open ecosystem of specialized AI networks spanning inference, agents, data and compute. World focuses on proof-of-human infrastructure.
A Small Sector Is Suddenly Getting Attention
The numbers leave plenty of room for skepticism. A 54% monthly gain is impressive, but the entire AI crypto sector remains worth only about $15 billion.
Grayscale’s view is that the sector could produce one or more major winners over the next five years. The bigger question is whether blockchains actually become useful infrastructure for the emerging agent economy.
For now, the crypto AI sector has delivered the performance. The next test is whether that enthusiasm develops into something bigger than a September rally.
